Hi, I’m Lisa and I’m excited to be here with you!
I spent 25+ years as a PR and brand communications executive in New York City, leading strategy for global travel, hospitality, and wellness brands to help them earn meaningful media coverage and build strong, lasting visibility. Throughout that time, I was also deeply drawn to the world of wellness, healing, and intuitive practice — long before it became mainstream — becoming a certified practitioner and wellness expert myself.
Looking back at my PR career, I’ve had the privilege of shaping the stories of some of the most esteemed and respected brands in luxury travel and hospitality, including Mandarin Oriental; The Well New York; Dorchester Collection; Lungarno Collection (Ferragamo-owned hotels); Fairmont Hotels & Resorts; The Cove Atlantis and Atlantis, Paradise Island; and Marriott International, as well as collaborating with leading lifestyle and wellness brands such as Athleta, lululemon, essie, and Naturopathica to create programs and partnerships that generated powerful media exposure and engagement for my clients.
When I launched my boutique wellness lifestyle & consulting brand JoyWelle, I brought all that experience together — my strategic PR foundation, deep industry insight, and intuitive understanding of the wellness space — to help brands and professionals develop, refine, and elevate their approach to wellbeing strategy, brand pillars, programming, and partnerships. In essence traditional PR refers to the practice of establishing strategic media relationships across channels including print magazines, newspapers, online publications, and broadcast media (TV, podcasts, radio) to promote your business and gain a positive image via unpaid press stories. There are many techniques, many more advanced, that you can use as part of a comprehensive and strategic PR plan, however, this course will focus on the foundational techniques for pitching traditional media. PR is a PART of any marketing strategy. Marketing is the umbrella term to promote your business and has numerous techniques that are both paid and unpaid. Traditional PR is one of those techniques and, for sake of this course (and unless otherwise mentioned), will refer to getting featured in unpaid media stories. We will explore this differentiation more in the course.

The simple answer is yes, but it’s one of the most challenging features to land and requires more advanced skills for storytelling. Media are very discerning and anything they feature, whether as a story or in photography must align with a bigger story they are telling. We will discuss this in more detail in the course.

I am a big fan of PR firms and spent most of my career working in them. But, if you are a smaller business or solopreneur, your budgets may be lean. You generally need to commit a minimum of $5K/month on a 1 year contract (so $60K/year) to engage a PR agency. There are freelancers who may charge less, but you’re still looking at an investment and longer-term commitment. Reputable agencies won’t do anything for less than a 6-month project as they need that time to learn about you/your business and start generating results for you. If you are willing and interested to do it on your own initially, you absolutely can AND, the skills you learn in this course will support you when you hire an agency. Trust me, agencies love it when their clients know what PR is, how to best leverage it and what they need for success. They’d rather not have to spend your money teaching you and prefer to get pitching. Afterall, you’re hiring them to get you media coverage, not educate you. Specifically, we will focus on soft news / lifestyle stories and NOT hard, breaking news or crisis communications.
